DPI, or dots per inch, tells you how sharp an image will look once it’s printed at a specific physical size — it has nothing to do with monitors or screens. This calculator works out the DPI of an image from its pixel dimensions and the size you plan to print it at, so you can check whether a photo, poster, or document will come out crisp or noticeably soft before you send it to a printer.

What the Result Means

The number you get back is the count of printed dots packed into each inch of the final printout. Higher DPI means finer detail and smoother edges, because more dots are used to render the same inch of paper. Lower DPI means each dot is doing more visual work, which shows up as visible pixelation, blurry edges, or a “soft” look, especially in fine detail like text, faces, or thin lines.

As a general rule of thumb, 300 DPI is the standard threshold for photo-quality prints — the point where most people can no longer see individual dots at normal viewing distance. Between roughly 150–300 DPI, results range from acceptable to good depending on the content and how closely someone examines the print. Below about 150 DPI, pixelation usually becomes noticeable, particularly for images with faces, text, or straight lines. Large-format prints like posters and banners are an exception: they’re viewed from farther away, so they can look fine at 100–150 DPI or even lower.

How This Calculator Works

DPI for a digital image is calculated as:

DPI = image width in pixels ÷ print width in inches

The calculator takes the pixel dimensions of your image file (which you can usually find in your camera app, photo editor, or file properties) and divides by the physical width you intend to print, then reports the resulting dots-per-inch figure. The same math applies to height — for a proportional print, width and height should give you the same DPI value.

Worked example: Suppose you have a photo that’s 3000 pixels wide, and you want to print it at 10 inches wide. 3000 ÷ 10 = 300 DPI — right at the standard photo-quality threshold, so the print should look sharp. Now take that same 3000-pixel-wide photo and blow it up to a 30-inch-wide poster: 3000 ÷ 30 = 100 DPI. At that size the print is viewed from farther back, so 100 DPI can still look reasonable, but it would look noticeably soft if you held it as close as you’d hold a standard 4×6 photo print.

Important Limitations

This calculator computes DPI from pixel count and print size alone — it can’t account for the printer hardware itself, the paper stock, the ink or toner quality, or the color profile used, all of which also affect how sharp a final print looks. A file can technically hit 300 DPI and still print poorly if it was upscaled from a smaller original, over-compressed as a JPEG, or out of focus to begin with; DPI describes pixel density, not the underlying image quality.
