How This Calculator Works
PPI is calculated from a screen’s diagonal resolution and its diagonal size in inches:
PPI = diagonal resolution in pixels ÷ diagonal size in inches
Diagonal resolution is found using the Pythagorean theorem on the horizontal and vertical pixel counts: √(width² + height²). The calculator takes your screen’s width and height in pixels, computes the diagonal pixel count, then divides that by the diagonal screen size you enter in inches.
Worked example: Take a 27-inch monitor running 2560×1440 resolution. The diagonal pixel count is √(2560² + 1440²) ≈ √(6,553,600 + 2,073,600) ≈ √8,627,200 ≈ 2937 pixels. Divide that by the 27-inch diagonal: 2937 ÷ 27 ≈ 109 PPI. Compare that to a 27-inch 4K (3840×2160) monitor, which works out to roughly 163 PPI — noticeably sharper, because it packs far more pixels into the same physical screen size.
Important Limitations
PPI is a useful number for comparing displays, but it doesn’t capture everything about perceived sharpness. Panel type, anti-aliasing and font rendering, screen coating, and how close you actually sit to the screen all affect how sharp a display looks in practice, independent of its raw PPI figure. A high-PPI display viewed from far away can look no sharper than a lower-PPI one viewed up close — perceived sharpness depends on angular pixel density (how many pixels fall within your field of view), not PPI in isolation.
