AM4 is still one of the most common gaming platforms, and it has one big advantage: you can upgrade the processor without changing the motherboard or DDR4 memory. But which AM4 CPU is actually the best for gaming in 2026, and is the jump from a Ryzen 5 5600 to a 5700X3D or 5800X3D worth it?
We compared all 7 AM4 processors in our database using the gaming score and engine behind our PC Bottleneck Calculator and CPU tier list. These are estimates from our gaming-performance scores (placed from published review averages), not our own benchmarks.
Quick answer
- Best AM4 CPU for gaming: the Ryzen 7 5800X3D (gaming score 70), thanks to its 3D V-Cache. It is 35% ahead of the Ryzen 5 5600 in our index.
- Close second: the Ryzen 7 5700X3D (score 66, 27% ahead of the 5600), the same 8-core 3D V-Cache design at lower clocks (4.1 vs 4.5 GHz boost).
- Budget pick: the Ryzen 5 5600 (score 52, 88W) is enough for cards up to the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB at 1080p and the RX 7900 XT at 1440p without a noticeable bottleneck.
- Skip: the Ryzen 7 5800X and 5700X add 2 cores over the 5600 but only 5 and 3 points of gaming score; for gaming, the X3D chips are the meaningful step up.

Gaming score is our own index (higher is faster in games). FPS ceiling is the most the CPU can deliver in a typical AAA game at high settings with the fastest graphics card, in our estimate; esports titles run roughly 2.8 times higher. The last two columns show the fastest card each CPU drives without a noticeable (15%+) bottleneck. Power is maximum package power (AMD PPT).
| Processor | Cores / threads | Boost | Max power | Gaming score | FPS ceiling | Fastest GPU at 1080p | Fastest GPU at 1440p |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 7 5800X3D | 8 / 16 | 4.5 GHz | 142W | 70 | 149 | RX 9070 | RTX 4090 |
| Ryzen 7 5700X3D | 8 / 16 | 4.1 GHz | 142W | 66 | 140 | RTX 5070 | RTX 5080 |
| Ryzen 7 5800X | 8 / 16 | 4.7 GHz | 142W | 57 | 121 | RTX 4070 | RTX 4080 |
| Ryzen 7 5700X | 8 / 16 | 4.6 GHz | 88W | 55 | 117 | RX 6800 | RTX 4080 |
| Ryzen 5 5600X | 6 / 12 | 4.6 GHz | 88W | 54 | 115 | RX 6800 | RX 9070 XT |
| Ryzen 5 5600 | 6 / 12 | 4.4 GHz | 88W | 52 | 111 | RTX 5060 Ti 16GB | RX 7900 XT |
| Ryzen 5 3600 | 6 / 12 | 4.2 GHz | 88W | 42 | 89 | Arc B580 | RX 7800 XT |
Upgrading from a Ryzen 5 5600: 5700X3D or 5800X3D?
For a Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X owner, a 3D V-Cache chip is the biggest gaming upgrade AM4 offers. The table shows how much of a modern graphics card each CPU can use at 1080p, where the CPU matters most.
| Graphics card (1080p) | Ryzen 5 5600 | Ryzen 7 5700X3D | Ryzen 7 5800X3D |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 5060 Ti 16GB | CPU 12%, 111 FPS | GPU-limited, 125 FPS | GPU-limited, 125 FPS |
| RTX 5070 | CPU 32%, 111 FPS | CPU 14%, 140 FPS | CPU 8%, 149 FPS |
| RX 9070 XT | CPU 43%, 111 FPS | CPU 28%, 140 FPS | CPU 24%, 149 FPS |
| RTX 5070 Ti | CPU 44%, 111 FPS | CPU 29%, 140 FPS | CPU 25%, 149 FPS |
With an RTX 5070 at 1080p, the 5600 leaves about 32% of the card idle; the 5700X3D cuts that to 14% and the 5800X3D to 8%. At 1440p and 4K the graphics card is the limit with all three, so if you play at 1440p or higher on an RTX 5060 Ti-class card, the 5600 is still enough and the money is better spent on the GPU. Before swapping the CPU, check your motherboard maker’s CPU support list and update the BIOS, and note that the X3D chips are rated at 105W TDP (142W maximum) against the 5600’s 65W, so check your cooler too. Our PC Upgrade Calculator shows whether the CPU or the graphics card is the better next upgrade for your build.
AM4 or move to AM5?
In our index the Ryzen 7 5700X3D (66) is level with the Ryzen 5 7600 (67), and the 5800X3D (70) is a little ahead of it. Moving to AM5 means a new motherboard and DDR5 memory as well as the CPU, so for a gaming-only upgrade on an existing AM4 system, an X3D chip gets you similar gaming performance for just the cost of the processor. AM5 makes more sense for a new build, or if you want the headroom of a Ryzen 7 7800X3D (score 87) for a high-end graphics card.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best AM4 CPU for gaming?
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D, with a gaming score of 70 in our index, followed closely by the Ryzen 7 5700X3D (66). Both use AMD’s 3D V-Cache, which is what puts them ahead of the 5800X (57) and 5700X (55).
Is the Ryzen 7 5700X3D worth it over the Ryzen 5 5600?
For gaming at 1080p with a mid-range or faster card, yes: it is 27% ahead in our index and cuts the RTX 5070 bottleneck at 1080p from 32% to 14%. At 1440p and above with a mid-range card, the 5600 is usually still enough.
5700X3D or 5800X3D: which should I buy?
The 5800X3D is about 6% faster in our index because of its higher clocks; both have 8 cores, 16 threads and the same 142W maximum power. If the price gap is large, the 5700X3D gives most of the gain.
Is AM4 still worth it in 2026?
For upgrading an existing AM4 system, yes: an X3D chip matches a Ryzen 5 7600-class AM5 CPU in our index without a new motherboard or DDR5. For a brand-new build, AM5 gives a longer upgrade path.
